Auto Add Product
Auto Add Product shows a dedicated section in checkout when the customer’s cart meets your conditions, typically a cart value threshold. When the section appears, customers need to click to add the product to their cart, as Shopify restricts adding products automatically.
This is the most effective type for spend-based promotions: “Spend $50 and claim your gift.”
How it works
Section titled “How it works”- You set a product and conditions (e.g. cart total ≥ $50).
- When a customer’s cart qualifies, a dedicated block appears in checkout showing the product.
- The customer clicks to add it to their cart.
- If the customer removes items and their cart drops below the threshold, the block disappears automatically.
When to use Auto Add Product
Section titled “When to use Auto Add Product”- You are running a promotion tied to a spend threshold
- You want the offer to feel automatic and earned rather than a sales pitch
- You want the section to appear and disappear based on whether the customer qualifies
- The product you are offering is always the same (not customer-choice)
If you want the customer to choose from multiple products or variants, use Optional Gift instead.
How to set up
Section titled “How to set up”- Go to Checkout Upsells and click Create.
- Select Auto Add as the type.
- Select the product to offer:
- Manual: pick a specific product or variant
- Collection: choose from a collection
- Configure the display settings (heading, button text, button style).
- Optionally add a campaign image to make the section visually prominent.
- Set Display Rules: at minimum, set a cart total threshold. You can also add conditions for specific products in the cart, customer tags, or shipping country.
- Set a schedule if this promotion has a start and end date.
- Click Save.

Conditions & scheduling
Section titled “Conditions & scheduling”Display Rules are what make Auto Add Product work. Without them the section would appear for every customer.
The most common condition is Cart total is at least $X. You can combine this with other rules:
- Only for specific products in the cart
- Only for customers with a specific tag (e.g. loyalty members)
- Only for orders shipping to a specific country

Use Schedule to automatically start and stop the promotion on specific dates.
Where it appears
Section titled “Where it appears”Works on checkout page. You must add the Checkout Upsell block in the Shopify checkout editor.
Product setup
Section titled “Product setup”The product you select must exist in your Shopify catalogue. Make sure the price is set correctly in Shopify as the app uses the product’s Shopify price at checkout.
If your product has variants (size, colour), select the specific variant you want to offer in the form. Customers cannot choose a variant. You pre-select it.
