Summary

Shopify deprecated legacy customer accounts in February 2026. The new version isn't just a rebrand. It's a different architecture with features that actually matter: passwordless login, self-serve returns, app extensions, and store credit. Here's what changed and why it's a better experience for merchants and customers.

Shopify deprecated legacy customer accounts in February 2026. If you’re still wondering about migrating, here’s what the new version actually gives you and why it makes sense to migrate.

Passwordless sign-in

Customers sign in with their email and a one-time passcode. No passwords, no password reset emails, no “I can’t log in” support tickets. The sign-in experience is faster and removes friction that stops customers from accessing their account in the first place.

Self-serve returns

Customers can start a return directly from their account page for eligible orders, without contacting support. For most merchants, this alone reduces a significant volume of support requests that currently go through email or chat.

App extensions managed from the theme editor

New features are added to the customer account through app extensions without any code changes to your theme. Adding a reorder popup, a loyalty widget, or a custom page is a task in the Shopify theme editor. Removing it is just as simple.

Store credit in the account

Customers can see their store credit balance directly in their account and spend it at checkout. No confusion about how much credit they have, no support questions asking you to check for them.

Built to scale

The new customer account isn’t a feature, it’s the infrastructure Shopify is building on. Legacy accounts are no longer getting updates or support, and a final sunset date will be announced later in 2026.

If you’re still on legacy accounts, the migration is worth doing now rather than under a deadline.

Reorder experience

The new account includes a basic Buy Again button that adds items from a past order to cart. For many merchants that’s enough.

But for merchants who sell personalised products, need customers to edit quantities or select specific products before reordering, have buyers who order across multiple past orders, or sell subscription products alongside regular ones, then Buy Again & Reorder Reminders adds a reorder popup and a Buy Again page to the customer account through the Shopify theme editor without touching the code. Buy Again & Reorder Reminders

Turn one-time Shopify buyers into repeat customers with effortless reorder popup, reorder page and reorder reminders sent at right time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Shopify's new customer accounts and legacy customer accounts?

Shopify's new customer accounts support passwordless sign-in, self-serve returns, store credit visibility, and app extensions that can be managed from the Shopify theme editor without touching code. Legacy customer accounts required passwords, didn't support UI extensions, and had no native returns flow. Legacy accounts are now deprecated and no longer receiving feature updates.

Are Shopify legacy customer accounts going away?

Yes. Shopify deprecated legacy customer accounts on February 26, 2026. They are no longer available to new stores, and Shopify has stopped providing feature updates and technical support. A final sunset date will be announced later in 2026. Merchants should migrate to the new customer accounts ahead of that deadline.

Do app extensions work with legacy Shopify customer accounts?

No. Customer account UI extensions only work with the new version of customer accounts. Apps that use extensions to add features to the account like reorder popups, buy again pages, or loyalty widgets won't work on legacy accounts.

Can customers see their store credit in Shopify's new customer account?

Yes. Customers can view their store credit balance directly in the new customer account and apply it at checkout without any manual steps or contacting support.
